NETGEAR Router Setup

You just bought a new NETGEAR router and want to set it up with your internet modem so, you can access the internet through the Wi-Fi Network. Some people may think of this as a hard thing because they are not familiar with the router setup, however, this is not. Setting up a router is an easy thing and it takes about 5 minutes or so and you are done with setting up your router.

How to set up a NETGEAR router using the Nighthawk app?

Here is how you can set up a NETGEAR router through the admin dashboard of the router: (This method is for old routers only, new routers can be setup using the Nighthawk app)

Power on the router

The first thing you gotta do is power on your router. To power on your router, you should:

  1. Take the router out of the box along with the power cable.
  2. Connect one end of the power cable to the rear of the router while other to the power source.
  3. After connecting the power cable and turning the power supply on, the router should now turn on.

Connect Router and Modem

Once the router is powered on, you should connect it to your modem so it is able to access the internet. To connect your router and modem, you should:

  1. Take an ethernet cable.
  2. Connect one end of the cable to the back of the router in the WAN/Internet port while the other end of the cable to the back of the modem in the LAN/Ethernet port.
  3. Your router would be now connected to the modem.

Set up the router using the admin dashboard

Now, to set up and configure the router, you gotta first connect your PC to the router and then set up the router. Here is how you do it:

  1. Take another ethernet cable.
  2. Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the ethernet port on your PC while the other end on the back of your router in the ethernet port. You can also connect using the router’s Wi-Fi network.
  3. Now, that your PC is connected to NETGEAR Router, open a web browser.
  4. In the URL bar of the browser, type http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com and press Enter. You can also enter your router’s default gateway address i.e 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  5. You will be taken to the login page. Enter the login username and password.
    • The default credentials are:
      • Username: admin  
      • Password: password
  6. Once logged in, click on Setup Wizard in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  7. Setup Wizard will display, click on Yes.
  8. The Setup Wizard will detect your Internet Connection and you will be now able to access the internet.
  9. You can go to Maintenance > Router Status to see if you are connected to the internet or not.

How to set up a NETGEAR router using the Nighthawk app?

You can also set up your router using the Nighthawk app which is the easiest way to set up a NETGEAR router. Along with that, you can use the Nighthawk app to view the connected devices on the network, perform speed tests, and manage the Wi-Fi settings only from your mobile phone.

However, you should keep this in mind that the Nighthawk app supports new routers only and if you are having an old router then you should follow the aforementioned method to set up your NETGEAR Router.

Here is how you can set up your NETGEAR router using the Nighthawk app:

  1. Download and install the Nighthawk app on your mobile phone from Google Play Store/App Store.
  2. Power on your router by connecting the power cable.
  3. Also, connect your router and modem using an ethernet cable, so a connection is established between the router and the modem.
  4. Once the router is powered on and connected to the modem, connect to the Wi-Fi network of the router from your mobile phone.
  5. You can find the router’s Wi-Fi network SSID and password on the bottom/back of your router.
  6. Once you are connected to the Wi-Fi network of the router, open the NETGEAR Nighthawk app on your mobile phone.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your router and connect to the internet.
  8. Once that is done, you will be able to access the internet from your router’s Wi-Fi network.
